Privacy

I think the issue of privacy is relevant to any and everyone who participates in any sort of online communication. What struck me, though, was the Danah Boyd presentation. My favorite part about that presentation was how teenagers have managed create privacy in unconventional ways. I loved the girl who posted the Monty Python reference to bypass her mom's over reaction. That's creative! But I feel like teens put more effort into ensuring privacy from their parents/teachers than they do into how they can protect their personal information with some basic privacy practices.

I can't really relate to having a super searchable name (I don't even have a middle name, so it's not like someone could even narrow their search that way if they wanted to). It seems to me, that most teenagers don't see any harm in sharing copious amounts of personal information about themselves online, because that's the norm now. But this can have some serious bad side effects. I wonder if "modesty" so-to-speak, will become a thing of the past. What should we be teaching our children about online privacy and how can we underline it's importance?
